So I replaced the Atlas crossing with a Peco single slip switch with
metal frogs. With the simple crossing I had realized that a train on
the yard's arrival track would block access to the engine house, hence
the single slip instead. I thought about a double slip, but decided
that a single slip was enough complexity for now. Power to the frogs
is provided through the spare contacts on the Tortoise switch machines
that drive the points. Unfortunately the tie spacing is not the same
as the Atlas track. Connecting to the Atlas track was challenging as
well since the Peco rail is taller with extra rail sticking down into
the ties. The extra webbing had to be cut off the bottom of the rail,
and the roadbed had to be trimmed down to get the tops of the rails to
line up.
