The Radio Shack rare eath magnets work extremely well (too well!) for
uncoupling. I used some Radio Shack perf board to mount the magnets.
Two pieces glued back-to-back are the same height as the roadbed; the
top piece is drilled out to hold the magnets, with a little CA
glue. The perf-board is conveniently drilled on 0.1" centers to allow
placing the mangets .3" × .4".
I say they work "too" well for two reasons:
-
When placed directly under the rails (approx 0.4") the pulled the
couplers too far apart so that they went beyond the "delayed" position
and ended up touching the other car's body when shoving.
-
I'm switching my rolling stock to metal wheels and the magnets like to
grab on to these as well as the couplers! So much so that when
pulling four or more cars slowly over the magnets, they would attract
the metal wheels of the trailing car and pull it forward, creating a
serious "slinky" effect and also causing unintentional uncoupling!
